We love our volunteers – update winter 2011
As you will all know by now we have won the Canoe England Canoe Club of the Year Award 2011, with you, our fabulous volunteers this would not have been possible. So this is all about a huge great big thank you! THANK YOU!
Here’s a round-
Volunteer recognition awards
The last Saturday in October also saw the end of season social and volunteer awards evening. As well as an opportunity to show off our Halloween pumpkins (or Turnips), we also used the evening to thank you (our fabulous volunteers) for your help at club events and activities over the season. Those recognised for their volunteering this season were: Kevin Whittington, Naomi Fuller, Jess Acheson, Molly Acheson, Jan West, Keelan Day, Christine Brown and Ian Macadie. All eight received certificates and sought after HXCC Mugs and some choccies.
October River Clean Up & Slalom
In October we had the River Clean Up and slalom competition. Both of which were well attended by club members, whether cheering people on, competing or volunteering.
The competition its self was a good one, lots of paddlers from across the UK came to paddle and try their hardest for those last ditch points before the of the season. The weather was pretty kind to us really and the water level pretty good too (okay maybe a little damp for those on start and pre start duties but our star volunteers never complained).
We had lots of new members come down and help out for the first time, so we hope see much more throughout the winter and into the spring next year. Don’t let the cold put you off paddling or volunteering over the winter, it just makes the brew at the end all the more worth it and there’llbe plenty of opportunities.
New Volunteering roles
Although we are very lucky to have so many willing, skilled and committed members happy to play their part we are still always on the lookout for more volunteers and for people to help with the running the club. Two new roles have recently been created these are:
· Club Ambassadors – This would involve generally promoting the club, going with committee members to road shows and events, helping to design publicity material and generally promoting the club to new members, potential sponsors and the local community.
· Social Media Volunteer -
Role profiles will be available for these two voluntary positions very shortly from Victoria. more than one person van do each role so the more the merrier.
If that’s not your thing, here are some of the others ways you can help out too:
Writing articles for the newsletter, taking photos for the website, painting, looking at the river, DIY, writing press releases and funding bids, organising transport for trips, fundraising, coaching, mending kit, cooking for events, meeting groups before the their coached sessions, making cuppas, becoming a member of the committee and much more besides…
You don’t have to be an expert, just willing to muck in and lend a hand. It’s normally
good fun and there’s plenty of opportunities to try your hand at something different
and learn new skills. So if you are interested in helping out in any way or want
to discuss what you might be able to offer please contact Victoria Bradford – our

Please also get in touch if you have any ideas for how we could better recruit and look after our volunteers, or if you have ideas for fundraising or events.
