Around Bled - August 2006

Camping Sobec was a huge site (it's so big it's signed off the motorway!) Yet it didn't feel it - with loads of space to spread out and relax. The river went all round it - and there was a play wave to enjoy.

However, as the week in the Bled area was intended to be the family holiday part of the week, the activity centred on more touristy activities and eating cake - thanks to Les & Sarah's previous visit to Bled, everyone was directed to the Brown Bear - words and pictures could never do the cakes justice (cake is the national dish of Slovenia!). In fact the Brown Bear alone just about justifies the drive!!

Away for the cakes, there was swimming in Lake Bled, or at the campsites own lake - complete with inflatable iceberg and trampolines! (again the lake was less than warm!)

The campsite also had mini golf, tennis courts, cycle hire, bar and restaurant. Then dotted all over the place were kids playgrounds. So you hardly needed to leave the site (oh, except for the Brown Bear!)

A great new attraction in Bled was the toboggan run - think plastic sledge on monorail down v big hill!! From the bottom it looked ok, from the chairlift it looked huge! Haring down you soon realised why there were large brake now signs all the way!

Needless to say one go wasn't enough, although riding up for the third run with a fast approaching thunderstorm was a little worrying!

Heading away from the crowds, the Plant's and Ford's headed for a walk up the Pokljunka gorge - while at least one Stopford was up for paddling it, they'd have been disappointed - its not a grade 5, but a spectacular dry limestone gorge, with tunnels and boardwalks. Fantastic scenery and really quiet (unlike the nearby tourist trap the Vingtnar gorge) well worth the short drive out of town.

One day Sarah and Les took off to the other end of the country (about an hour and a half drive!) to visit Skocjan caves (a world heritage site). The caves were spectacular - the most enormous cavern, being viewed from a tiny bridge. Then just to ensure enough culture in the day, headed to Predjama Castle, built into a cavern.
