BUDDING canoeists dipped a paddle in the water at a series of taster sessions organised by the Club on 13th September 2008.

The sessions, proved to be massively popular – originally we optimistically planned to run three sessions on the day, but thanks to an article in the Courier we were in undated with enquiries and finished up running a full day with five sessions. In total 35 new paddlers came down and had a go in the 1½ hour sessions. And it was pretty obvious that everyone seemed to enjoy themselves with many people interested in continuing and are looking to sign up to the Club’s pool sessions over the winter.

Getting started on the riverA big Thank You to all the coaches and other members who made themselves available to run and help with the sessions, organise people off the water and chat enthusiastically to people about the club and the sport.

The day was part of a nationwide ‘Go Paddling’ programme organised by Canoe England (BCU) to encourage people to take up the sport in the follow up to the Bejing Olympics.

Finally to add a bit of history, we also had a visit from a former member – who paddled with the club in the late 1960’s (that’s before Brian!) who had seen the details in the paper and just though he’d pop down with some old photos and to see how the Club was doing. He also reminisced about racing in slalom when everyone had to use a folding kayak or canoe! (This was so people with cars didn’t have an advantage over those that had to get to events by train!!)
