With the first of our start slalom courses full and well underway, we are running another course. This is open to any member who is new to slalom (including those that have raced but not yet been promoted out of Div 4). The only standard you need to be at is happy to paddle on the white water course.

In the unlikely event that you’ve missed my previous mentions of slalom:

And if you don’t think you could, then I’d have to point out that David Florence, Olympic Silver Medalist in Bejing didn’t start canoeing until he was 14. Over 14’s don’t loose heart there are many people paddling in the top divisions of slalom who started much later and progressed quickly up the rankings. There are paddlers racing from 6 to 70+ years - so no ‘I couldn’t do it’ excuses!

On the back of our recent grant from Sport England we are putting on 4-week starter courses. He first three weeks are at the club then week 4 is at a Division 4 (beginners) slalom to have a go at racing! There should be some of our existing slalom paddlers there to cheer you on.

Course Dates: The next course will be running at the Club on Monday Evenings on 7th June, 14th June and 21st June (from 7pm). Then on Sat & Sun 26th & 27th June  we’ll be racing at  our very own Sowerby Bridge Division 3 / 4 slalom.

If you can’t make these dates, I’ll be running more courses during the year on different days of the week in the run up to other local slalom events. Check the website for future dates - but there’ll be a course in the run up to the slalom at West Tanfield in late September and possibly other in the summer if there is demand.

Cost: the coaching is free, but you will need to pay entry fees for the slalom race on the last weekend. At most this will be about £10 for adults, for under 18’s it is much cheaper!

If you want to join this second Start Slalom Course or are interested in the other dates I’ll be running during the year please get in touch.

Also any coaches interested in learning more about coaching slalom to paddlers, I’m happy for you to join me to assist / shadow (or participate!) in this or other courses I’ll be running during the year.
