Anyone fancy some sea-kayaking?

January 30th, ice and snow on the ground and the sky clear and blue. A small cove near Aberffraw, Angelsey, clear blue sea. Four sea-kayaks and four excited paddlers.. So begun one of the best days paddling that I have experienced to date. Shamim and I have been sea-kayaking a few times, most recently with Roger who runs Coastal Spirit based in North Wales and this was our third outing together.

The plan was to paddle from Aberffraw to Newborough on the west coast of Angelsey past the dunes and forest of the local nature reserve. Rounding the last headland we were met with the phenomenal view of sea, sand, forest, snow capped mountains and clear blue sky as we paddled surrounded by sea birds and the occasional seal. I may find sea kayaks the most wobbly and unresponsive craft I’ve sat in since my one go in the clubs leaky Wavehopper; I may have muttered constant expletives at the wind and waves that seemed determined to see me upside-down; I may have ached in every muscle for days afterwards but I wouldn’t have missed the moment we rounded that headland for the world.

So – does anyone else fancy giving this a go in May or June this year? I have negotiated a rate of £70 a day or £140 for a weekend inclusive of kayak and all equipment and the services of an experience coach. The only additional cost is camping, food and beer (or the beverage of your choice). If you do – let me know and we’ll set it up.
