River Levels

The recent torrential rains during the monsoon season (known as otherwise as summer) have swelled the level of the Calder and seen us cancel quite a lot of coaching sessions. This poses the question What is a safe level to paddle on the white water at the club?

For beginners and other inexperienced coached groups we operate up to what we class as a normal level. This is when the water is just breaching the top of the weir by the launching point

The river is paddleable in all but extreme high water. It is subject to run off from the local moors and river levels can rise very quickly. The most important thing is that when water levels are high, you must be able to beach at metal steps at the bottom of the course to get out. If not it is a long walk (about a 1km) back from the next get out point. Moreover the next weir down can be difficult in high water - a ‘wall to wall canoe-gobbler’ - with no portage. The best level is when the top weir is just breached.
