Halifax Canoe Club hold the Sport England Clubmark Award and are a BCU Top Community Club

Halifax CC Officially a Top Club!

BCU logoGreat News - in the middle of April 2004, Halifax Canoe Club were successful in gaining the British Canoe Union’s Top Community Club, and the Sport England Clubmark accreditations.

Members of the club recently collected the certificated for both awards at a presentation held at a White Rose Canoe Club event on the River Wharfe in Wetherby.

We are only the 6th Canoe Club in the country to have gained the BCU’s Top Club accreditation.

Sport England ClubmarkThe Sport England Clubmark is open to clubs in all sports, and we join a select group of sports club that hold this accreditation.

These awards recognise that clubs:

  • have a commitment to young people

  • provide safe, quality activity programmes

Congratulations are due to Cliff Speight who has led and co-ordinated our work towards the accreditation process and the team that have helped him with this achievement. A lot of hard work has gone in to pulling together information, sorting out policies and activity programmes to ensure that we successfully met the criteria set down for the awards.

But to use Cliff’s words ‘this is only the beginning’ we now need to capitalise fully on these awards. Ensuring we get the support form BCU, Sport England and other organisations, use this to access funding for the club, and ride the wave of good publicity that we are sure to receive from gaining these prestigious awards.

We have already begun to see this support from our regional Paddlesport Development Officer, Len Hartley and the two wavehopper kayaks that are on long term loan to the club (they are lime green and very long - you can’t miss them in the club house!) Also we need to keep the club and its members developing, and look towards gaining Top Performance Club status - for clubs with an active competitive focus.

So once again well done to all involved and here’s to reaping the benefits of all our hard work.
