Slalom Season 2008

The slalom season is well underway already (you've already missed the first few races!). If you raced at all last year, you should already have had your yearbook and information to send off for your bib. (Ladies please note the Bib Officer for Div 2 and 3 Ladies will be on holiday from 3rd-20th April).

If you haven’t raced for a while you can get reinstated (usually in the division you were in previously) and get back into racing this year.

If you’ve never raced before and want to have a go or have still to be promoted from Division 4, there are plenty of local events coming up over the spring and summer for you to give it a go and try to get promoted.

  • 5/6 April - Marple Div 3/4 (nr Stockport)

  • 12/13 April - Matlock Div 2/3 (Derbyshire)

  • 19/20 April - Sowerby Bridge Div 2/3 - ** Course erecting for Sowerby Slalom - 12th April from 10am - Also I'm happy to run practice / caoching session each evening in the week leading up to this contact me If interested

  • 26/27 April - Oughtibridge Div 3/4 (Sheffield)

  • 10/11 May - Waggon Lane Div 3/4 (Bingley)

  • 24/25 May - Teesside Div 3/4 (this is on the warm up pool not the main white water course)

  • 7/8 June - Sowerby Bridge Div 3/4    ** Course erecting for Sowerby Bridge event likely to be on Sat 31st may (tbc) - Also I'm happy to run practice / caoching session each evening in the week leading up to this contact me If interested

  • 28/29 June - Howsham Weir Div 2/3 (between Malton and York). This also includes the regional interclub championship – so we need a good turn out of paddlers to enter a team.

  • 5/6 July - Washburn Div 2 – this includes the Yorkshire Championship – an individual event where you compete in slalom, freestyle and wild water racing (any one or all of them)

Coaching: As well as running slalom training sessions on a Wednesday night (come and join us!), we hope to be able to provide coaching at most of these races to help you tackle the course and get the best result possible. If you are planning to go to one of these races please speak to Les Ford to arrange to be coached.

Although not a ’local’ event we are also going to Bala Mill for their Div 2/3 on the first May Bank Holiday weekend (3/4 May) – again speak to Les if you want to come along /want coaching at the race.

A final date for your diaries is the Yorkshire Region’s Scottish training week at Grandtully. This starts with the Div 2/3/4 slalom at Fairnilee on 16/17 August, and then move up to ‘Tully for a week of training and finishes with the Div 1/2 event on the 23/24 August. This is a great week of training, being coached in group of a similar level, with sections of water to suit differing abilities. This can be a great mid season boost, getting you ‘tuned up’ for the events running through to the end of the season.

For more details about any of the these events or slalom generally speak to Les Ford at the club , on ( 01484 854099 or email or visit www.canoeslalom.co.uk

If anyone hasn't got a yearbook, I have some copies of the slalom calendar, which I'll have with me at the enrolment night.
