Safety CornerJust a few bits of information on safety for you all to take note of please. Emergency Evacuation Procedures for the Clubhouse Notices have gone up in the club with details on procedures in the event of fire - including locations of emergency assembly points. For the benefit of everyone, please take a minute to familiarise yourself with these next time you are at the clubhouse. Dangerous Weirs A few older and wiser members of the club have raised concerns that some newer members may not realise the dangers of paddling some of the weirs on the river above and below the club - particularly in high water levels like we have had in the last few months. For instance the first weir below Sowerby turns into a wall to wall canoe gobbler in high water levels! And could be lethal in these conditions! And this is not the only potentially dangerous one in easy reach of the club So their concern is this - if you are going to paddle these weirs, be sure you know the dangers involved and what to consider in making a decision about when and when not to paddle these weirs (and in fact any weir). The simple rule ‘if in doubt don’t do it’ works well here. No one wants to stop people paddling, but we don’t want any accidents either. So, if you don’t have the experience to judge when a weir is safe and when its not, be sure to paddle with some-one who has the experience - and ask them to explain their decision so that you learn for the future. Be smart and keep safe Boat Storage Recently a few boats have been left lying on the floor on the clubhouse. These are a hazard to other people, particularly as they have to step over them when carrying their own boat in and out. Please put your boat (or the club boat you have been using) back on the rack - Do not leave it in the middle of the floor! (of course if you’ve not paid for storage your boat shouldn’t be kept in the club). |
