Halifax Canoe Club hold the Sport England Clubmark Award and are a BCU Top Community Club

Equipment Loans

Well, not strictly true. In fact not true at all, but if you are wanting to borrow gear for paddling over the summer months (or at any other time), please make sure you follow the club’s revised booking procedure.

The club is happy for people to borrow club equipment, provided that it doesn’t mean that kit isn’t available for the weekly sessions that run Monday to Thursday. There may be other organised events where club equipment needs to be at the club.

Equipment you can borrow includes boats, paddles, spray decks, helmets and buoyancy aids. Club throw lines are NOT available to borrow except by trip leaders on club trips.

There are two types of equipment loan.

One is for activities organised by or through the club, like slalom races, river trips etc. For these, provided equipment isn’t needed for other club activities, you can borrow club boats and other kit free of charge.

The second type of loan is for personal use, like a holiday or a paddling course you arrange for yourself. For these, provided equipment isn’t needed for club activities, you can borrow club boats and other kit for a small donation to the club (a suggested amount for a boat, paddle and other bits is £10 for a weekend and £25 for a week).

Remember, this only applies to club gear. If you are not sure what is club gear and what isn’t, check with someone who knows before taking anything!

To borrow gear, this is how it works:

  1. A few weeks before you want to borrow the gear, ring the equipment officer (currently me) to check if it will be ok to borrow it at that time. This gives you time to make alternative arrangements if the equipment you want to borrow isn’t available.
  2. If the gear you want is available, I will book it out for you for the period you want it for, i.e. from collection to return. Please try to book the collection of gear no more than a week before your trip.
  3. When you return it, ring me again to tell me so I will book it back in. Please try to get the gear back within a week of returning from your trip. I will also want to know about any damage or losses, so that if necessary we can arrange repairs or replacement. This bit is based entirely on trust.
  4. If you are borrowing equipment for personal use, please make a cheque payable to “Halifax Canoe Club” and give it or send it to me before, or soon after, you’ve borrowed the gear.
  5. Remember, damages and losses are your responsibility as the borrower, and unless you have told me beforehand, it will be assumed that the gear was all OK before you borrowed it. So we recommend that recommend that you check gear over before you take it and that you take out adequate insurance cover to meet the full replacement cost if the worst happens.
  6. Remember too that if you just take gear without booking it out, you might be taking something already booked by another club member, so please make sure you use the booking system.

This revised booking system replaces the paper-based system at the club, so you don’t have to remember to fill anything in, or find a pen, or find a dry page or anything – just ring me up.

My details are also on the notice-board at the club.

Cheers,

Adrian 07968 231742

All equipment loans should now go through our new equipment officer Simon Spencer (contact details coming soon)
