Halifax Canoe Club hold the Sport England Clubmark Award and are a BCU Top Community Club

Awards for All Report

Just over a years ago , we received an Awards for All grant (National Lottery funding) for the club - so at the end off the grant period, what have we done with the money and how has it helped us?

We received £4805 from Awards for All for junior development which has had a significant impact for the club and provided numerous benefits

The new trail on a weekend in the LakesThe purchase of a canoe trailer has allowed the club to take more canoes and kayaks on trips away from the club, enabling more young people to participate in these activities. So far the trailer has been used to take boats for young people to slalom events, a Canadian canoe weekend, family paddling weekends and a kids river trip. It is also being used for the weekly pool session over winter.

The 5 junior ‘playboat’ kayaks purchased with this grant have been a great hit with our young members. These have been used several times a week since they were purchased. Having kayaks that are the right size for young people means that they have developed much faster than they would have done if they were struggling in ‘adult

The funding allocated to coach training has allowed us to significantly increase the number of coaches in the club and increase the skills and qualification of some of our other coaches. During the year, the club has gained six new coaches, four of whom have gone on to pass the Level 2 Coach Assessment, the other two currently gaining experience ready to undertake assessment. Also two coaches have to completed their Level 3 Coach Assessment. Funding has also supported one coach to do more advance coach training and assessor training, ensuring that the club can offer the higher levels of training and awards that some members want to achieve.

It is just as well that we have been able to increase the number of coaches within the club, as 2005 has been our busiest summer for some time. During the summer we ran 8 coached sessions a week between April and September. This included 5 courses for beginners, several courses leading to BCU 2 and 3 star, sessions to develop playboating and slalom skills, and the weekly Tigersharks activity sessions all available to young people. We also offered young paddlers the chance to progress to the BCU 4 star award.

Although the coach training element of the grant has overspent slightly, the club’s committee agreed that such was the benefit that this was bringing that the club would cover this from its own funds.

Perhaps the greatest benefit of the grant has been to ensure that the club is in a good position to continue these activities in future. The trailer and the kayaks will serve the club for many years. Our expanded coaching team will be able to continue to offer a high level paddling activity for young people next year and beyond.
