Halifax Canoe Club hold the Sport England Clubmark Award and are a BCU Top Community Club

Your Club Needs You!!!

With this newsletter you will have received notice of the forthcoming Halifax Canoe Club AGM on 23rd Feb 2008, at Sowerby Bridge Cricket Club.

An important item of business on the AGM agenda is the election of members to the committee.

Committee members usually serve for two years and then retire or offer themselves for re-election. This year, 7 posts are up for election:

  • Vice Chair
  • Secretary
  • Youth Co-ordinator
  • Events
  • Competition
  • Marketing (one year only)
  • Equipment (one year only)

This is a great opportunity to bring some new talent, ideas and enthusiasm onto the committee and the more people who wish to put themselves forward, the healthier it is for the future development and improvement of the club. Don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before – every club member has something they can offer to the committee and you will be supported as you settle into the role by experienced committee members.

Being on the committee is a great way to find out what is going on in the club and to influence its future development. How much time would you need to put in? At a minimum, you’d need to attend one meeting a month (Currently alternating Wednesday and Thursday evening from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm) and carry out the duties associated with your role. These are set out in the role descriptions sent out with this newsletter. Each role has some basic things that you’ll need to keep on top of, but beyond this, how much time you put in depends entirely on you. We are all volunteers and know that people have busy lives and give what time they can.

Members of the committee usually become directors of the company limited by guarantee, which is the legal form the club takes, although the club’s rules do not make this obligatory. To discuss this aspect of committee membership, please contact the club Secretary (Shamim Lindsay on 01706 812265).

Nominations for the committee should be sent to the Secretary by 3rd February 2008. The address to send nominations to is on the form enclosed with the AGM notice. Nominations received will be posted in the club house on 8th Feb 2008.

If you want to nominate yourself, you need to find two other club members to propose and second you on the nomination form. Members of your family, if you have family membership, could do this, or any other club member. Alternatively, if you want to nominate someone else, make sure you have their consent before you send in the form.

Please volunteer if you can – the club has over 150 members now and to keep providing the facilities we do (and hopefully to improve them) needs commitment from members to share the work.

If you would like to find out more about any of the committee roles up for election this time, please contact any Mark, Shamim or any of the committee.
