River Clean Up Day (3rd June)

Those of you that have been paying attention over the last few weeks will have noticed a dramatic difference in the river banks at about the same time as the last slalom.

Assorted bags, bottles, bike bits, broken benches, big branches and other water borne bric-a-brac had gradually built up making the river look a real eye-sore. So how come the banks were so tidy in time for the Slalom – was it the rubbish fairies?

Well, yes and no – they were pretty rubbish as fairies if the amount of slipping and splashing was anything to go by, but it really was down to the efforts of a few dedicated club members.

Saturday 3rd June was arranged with the Calder Futures group as a river cleanup day. It was a hot sunny day and within a few hours the magnificent 7 assisted by a few of the CF group had collected a huge number of bags of rubbish and Dave had salvaged several useful planks. A major job was removing the best part of a tree from the side of the second drop which was starting to become a hazard.

The result – a nice tidy venue for the slalom the following week end. Unfortunately it won’t last – please look out for future clean-up days and give your support.

Thanks to Dave, Mandy, Shamim and Mark, Michael and Thomas for their time and efforts.
