Are You a BCU Member? The British Canoe Union (BCU) is the national governing body of the sport and recreation of canoeing and kayaking in the UK. The Club is affiliated to the BCU and pays an annual membership fee. But we also have to pay an additional fee for each Adult member of the Club who isn’t a BCU member. This adds up to a lot of money for the club. Despite there being a space for this information on the Club membership form, very few people filled this section in so we don’t know whether Club members are BCU members (we are quite sure there are more than we have details about). Firstly if you are a BCU member please can you let John Elvidge know so we can update the Club’s records. And make sure you fill in this section of the Membership form next year But if you are into your paddling, it’s a good idea to think about becoming a BCU member to help support your sport and its interests. What does the BCU do? The BCU is responsible for; leading and setting the overall framework for the sport, representing canoeing interests, campaigning for access, coaching and competition at UK and international level. Today the BCU has an individual membership of over 25,000, 469 affiliated clubs and 145 approved centres. How much is membership? BCU Member ship starts at around £30 per year for adults (less for kids) - not a large amount of money to support your sport! Family memberships are also available so the whole family can join for a better deal. What do you get for your money? Benefits include; 3rd party insurance, regular magazine to keep up with the latest new in all areas of paddling, member offers and deals. . .and more. To be honest there’s too much to list here - have a look at the details in the Club yearbook (pages 44 and 45). For more information speak to one of the Club’s coaches or officials or visit the BCU’s website (you can join online). |
