Learn to Canoe with Halifax Canoe Club

Do you want to learn how to canoe?

You may have seen canoeists on the local river and wondered what it was like.

In the summer the club run Beginners Courses for both adults and children on the River Calder from our base in Sowerby Bridge. These are eight week courses run by our British Canoe Union qualified coaches with an emphasis on a safe and fun introduction to canoeing.

By the end of these courses you will be at a standard to take the BCU One Star Test.

Courses includes:

  • 6 coached classes

  • Hire of all equipment

  • Family / Individual membership of the club

  • BCU One Star test

In the winter the club run Pool Session for both adults and children at Elland Baths on a Monday evening. These are in blocks of six weeks with coaching available from our British Canoe Union qualified coaches. Learning to canoe in a swimming pool is a good way to learn in the winter - the water is warm if you do happen to fall in!
By the end of these sessions you will have covered the basic skills of maneuvering a canoe.

Pool sessions are open to our members as well as they provide an opportunity to learn advanced skills (such as Eskimo rolling) in the warm water.

Pool sessions include:

  • 6 coached session

  • Hire of equipment and entry to the pool

  • Family / Individual membership of the club for non members

When are these Courses or Pool Sessions?

The dates of upcoming courses or pool sessions can be found on the Events and Trips page. If no dates are listed please contact us to register your interest and we will let you know when courses are planned
