Sowerby Wavehopper Challenge

7th May 2005

It was a sunny, if windy afternoon day and there was a good level of water for our Perception Wavehopper event at the club. Some more competitors would have been good, but those that did come thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The start of the race was by the red bridge, giving a tricky 180 degree turn on the first drop - in boats that aren't easy to turn. All the youngsters did very well to master that and race down to the finish by the bottom steps. although one or two were caught out by the third drop.

The race was decided by the best of two runs, with all the youngsters going home with a medal, certificate, and hopefully a taste for racing. Congratulation to Tom Wild (U16 boys) and Jessica Acheson (U12 girls) for winning their classes.

After providing safety cover for the race the 'big kids' had a 'classic' race (it sounds better than veterans). The top end of this was hotly contested, with Les pipping Paul by just a second. Meanwhile Rob 'two swims' Acheson vowed not to get in one of those silly boats again as he emerged from the water mid way down the course!

The Wavehopper event is part of a series running around the country, aimed at getting young people to have a try at white water racing. The series has now finished for 2005 - details of nest years races will be posted when we have them.
