Halifax Canoe Club hold the Sport England Clubmark Award and are a BCU Top Community Club

White Water Safety & Rescue Course
May 2005

Well this was a course and a half  - I should of done it years ago. One I recommend you complete after your 3* Award. We set off Friday evening meeting many of the paddlers at the clubhouse. It was an easy journey to the campsite, Pen Y Bont, which was a lovely small site, not too far away from Tyweryn.

We had to get up at 07.00hrs to have breakfast and get ready to be at the centre for 08.30hrs, and my goodness the HXCC made it with time to spare, this for me was most inspirational part the HXCC on time “Wow”.

Anyway we arrived and registered and were introduced to the coaches, both Level 5s, Steve and Richie. It was decided to split us into two groups of six and I have nominated team names; the “Gerna’s” and “Getting There”. Here are the highlights:-

Day One

The “Gerna’s”

  • Defensive & offensive swimming by Rob A was amazing so engrossed he got washed away down the course.
  • Poor Boycie dieing after the swimathon.
  • Swimming in tow back weir, unreal
  • Swimming in Chapel Falls with rescues. This was very scary with little time to breath.
  • Live bait rescues, Moss with biggest leap to save Rob A
  • More live bait, with Paul grabbing Moss’s leg and nearly drowning him.
  • Myself being too small to hold Rob A on a throw line rescue.
  • I kept hold of both ends of the throw line, doh!
  • Rob A completing the river trip to the centre, and then swam. Had to be seen to be believed
  • Rob A during trip rolling above the Ski Slope, I bets his heart was in his mouth!!
  • The funniest moment was when myself & Rob A shouted to Andrea to stop, no go, no stop as she was practice her rescue techniques, the panic was great to see, and that’s why they are called team ‘Getting There’.

The “Getting There”

  • Pete threw the throw line without keeping hold
  • Funny enough so did Andrea
  • Cliff smiling like a Cheshire Cat when he was body surfing
  • Tom’s not old enough to have a knife
  • Put simply, Brian its no longer a dry sport???
  • Andrea saving Matt but opening the neck seal of dry suit, oh wet then.
  • Matt got wedged in the rocks, nice.

Day Two

Gerna’s

  • It was a laugh watching me, Boycie and Moss try to get Edward, eddy and ed hop.
  • Then there was Baywatch Paul, who dived into the water to save an unconscious
  • paddler.
  • The Magic Rope Work was mind blowing
  • Me getting tied up in the car park.
  • Rob A’s face when his cows tail got twisted and stuck.

Getting There

  • Scary, Toms got a kayak knife and was seen witling within ten min’s of buying?

Overall it was a great two days. If you are paddling at 3 star or above you need to go on this course, it could save your life or your paddling chums!!!! It teaches you a lot about self-rescue and lots more. Watch out the club is organising another course.
