River
Lune
Sunday 23rd November 2003
Once
again HXCC set up another river trip on the River Lune below Kirby Lonsdale. We
all met up on at the club in the stupid hours of the morning freezing to death
waiting for the brilliant organisational skills of the fearless leaders to kick
in.
When
we finally reached the river and was on the water I realised how dirty the water
on the course really is, the water was perfectly clear. There were a few minor
problems, Martin for instance somehow managed to rip my dry cag that I had
kindly lent him. But I think this was more unfortunate for him as he spent more
time swimming than he did kayaking.
But
there were some tricky drops especially for people in the bigger boats as they
discovered by getting pinned on the rocks upside down! Luckily, Stoppy was out
of his boat, managed to free them as they both, with great dignity, managed to
swim down the rest of the drop together. But it was a meaty drop and I didn’t
at first realise at first why about four guys with throw lines were standing on
the rocks at either side (soon found out though).
Yet
one of the funniest moments of the day was when we came down one of the bigger
drops. Andrea who was one of the first to descend the drop broke in to the eddy
off balance looking for anything to prevent her from taking a spill, found
Stoppy who was just behind her when she went down. Anyway they both went under,
they both swam, yeah Stoppy swam because he let go of his paddle, if he could
hand role that wouldn’t have been much of a concern (kart wheeling couldn’t
save you that time).
But
overall it was a brilliant day a brilliant river and it wouldn’t have happened
without the effort of those who organised it so thank you to Cliff et al for a
great day out.
Oh
and thanks for lend of the pogeys!
